Operational service:

1941, North Africa, 1 squadron , also seconded to RAAF 3 squadron

Lt. Smith was the first South African Air Force pilot to shoot down a German aircraft.

Lt. Smith was shot down (or collided) with an enemy aircraft on 17/6/1941 but died of wounds in Italian captivity 1/7/1941
